The world of online gaming has grown substantially over the past ten years with the introduction of new technologies and improved graphics to make the gaming experience even more exciting. We’ve even seen an uplift in the number of people enjoying eSports – the ability to watch and bet on teams playing some of their favorite games. Here, we’re looking at the different types of online games that you can find to get your teeth stuck.
Gambling Games
The online gambling industry has continued to grow and there was a specific uplift seen during the global pandemic as people look for more entertainment options available from the comfort of their own homes. So whether you’re a fan of bingo online or you prefer a classic casino game like blackjack, poker, slots, roulette, or any other casino game you can think of, you can probably find it available online in either game or live dealer form.
First-Person Shooter Games (FPS)
First-person shooter games (FPS) are a sub-genre of gaming that offers players the chance to enjoy a first-person perspective design using a gun or other form of combat. As the protagonist, you get full control of the direction of your character and how and when you use your weapons. There are several different mini-games found within this genre depending on the game, such as capture the flag, death matches, search and destroy, the last man standing, and many others. A popular example of an FPS is Call of Duty.
Real-Time Strategy Games (RTS)
Real-time strategy games are strategy-based video game which is not necessarily played in turns but allows you to make real-time decisions that impact the outcome of the turn or even of the game. Generally, you would need to capture different areas of the map or invade certain areas; however, this isn’t always the case.
Instead, you may simply be required to build certain things or collect and manage resources. Some popular examples of RTS games include Age of Empires, World of Warcraft, and more recently, League of Legends and DOTA.
Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMO)
These types of games are often played by hundreds, if not thousands of players, all featuring on the same server. An extension of this is MMORPG games which combine role-play elements of games with the MMO side. Some of the most popular MMO games include GTA, FarmVille, Fortnite, and Minecraft.
Multiplayer online battle arena games (MOBA)
MOBA games allow two teams to battle head-to-head in a virtual world, combining real-time strategy with a more forceful combat element. In these types of games, players need to work closely together in a strategic way to achieve the best outcome from the game – this is usually destroying the other team’s base or wiping out their team in combat. Some examples of MOBA games include Aeon of Strife and DOTA 2.
Battle Royale Games
A real combination game, Battle Royale games offer elements of survival, scavenging, and exploration while treating it as a last-man-standing thrill. These games generally start with lots of players, and the object of the game is to eliminate all of them to become the winner.
This game type was originally a by-product of other popular games in a mini-game form (i.e. Minecraft) but the popularity of these led to a whole new subgenre of gaming, with games like PUBG: Battlegrounds and Apex Legends jumping on the bandwagon to produce new game types for their players.
