The Most Expensive Video Games in History

Video games are one of the most popular forms of entertainment. They provide fascinating challenges, challenges that can be both relaxing and stimulating. It is no surprise, then, that the cost of developing and producing some video games has gone through the roof. In this article, we will have a look at the most expensive video games ever created to date.

These are not limited to AAA titles exclusively but also include other genres as well as platforms such as Nintendo or PlayStation systems. We will also explore certain features, such as exclusivity and rarity, which contribute to some games’ hefty price tags. To add an extra perspective to our list, we will include a special Canadian Bizzocasino platform game that might be of interest to those looking for something both new and exclusive at an entirely different level than typical AAA video game titles. With that being said, let’s jump into it!

3rd place. Marvel’s Avengers – $170 million to $190 million Marketing-Adjusted

In 3rd place on our list of the most expensive video games in history is Marvel’s Avengers. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and released in September 2020, Marvel’s Avengers was one of the year’s most highly anticipated and hyped titles. With its production costs estimated to be between $170 million and $190 million after adjustments for marketing, it certainly doesn’t come cheap.

The game features a single-player story campaign playable solo or cooperatively with up to four players. The narrative follows several iconic Avengers as they reunite to prevent a global catastrophe, all while fighting against the villainous Taskmaster and his minions. There are numerous playable characters that can level up and gain gear based on their performance in missions players take part in.

Marvel’s Avengers is one of the biggest games of 2020 and makes it onto this list due to its high production cost, considered historically high even after taking into account marketing expenses. This may be attributed to product licensing fees or any additional expenditure arising from promotional activities from companies involved, such as Microsoft, PlayStation, or Xbox. Despite mixed feedbacks from critics, fans were keen enough for Square Enix to greenlight a sequel for at least three more years.

2nd Place. Cyberpunk 2077 – $174 Million

Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming open-world, action-adventure video game developed and published by CD Projekt. It was originally announced in 2012 and has been in development for several years. It is anticipated to be one of the most expensive video games ever produced, with a reported budget of over $174 million.

In the futuristic first-person shooter RPG, players take on the role of V, a perpetual mercenary out to make their mark on Night City, a sprawling megalopolis wedged between California and Mexico. As they try to make their mark on this city filled with danger and mayhem, they must struggle with factions vying for control and survival in an underground world of smuggling and body modification cybernetics.

The graphics in Cyberpunk 2077 are said to be breathtakingly lifelike as CD Projekt Red has employed advanced rendering technology and image-based lighting effects, while fans can expect huge replayability as they customize their character’s looks, background story, and gear loadout before setting off into the immersive urban playground – Night City.

Despite having been in development for several years now, a release date has yet to be finalized for Cyberpunk 2077, but it is scheduled for release sometime this year. This is sure to be one of the most sought-after games of 2020 when it comes out – so keep an eye out!

1st Place. Star Citizen – $380 Million

Leading the charge for the most expensive video games ever developed is Star Citizen. This spaceflight simulator is being produced by Roberts Space Industries and Cloud Imperium Games and was first announced in 2012. After years of delays, it has still not been officially released, but it does have a number of playable components, with development continuing today. According to estimates from SuperData Research, approximately $380 million has been spent in total to develop the game so far.

Star Citizen utilizes asset-based crowdfunding to finance its development, having collected a whopping $276 Million USD between 2012 and June 2019 through platform site crowdfunding campaigns. Despite its hefty price tag, Star Citizen is still yet to reach its completion date as elaborate updates are being created continually. There are an estimated three million registered accounts currently connected to the game that has shown unwavering commitment so far through purchasing Emperor-level packages upfront, costing upwards of $2600 each.

Star Citizen offers players a first-person universe allowing travelers to explore 180 known star systems within a living, breathing world with a seamless experience from ground combat scenarios or boarding starships for space travel adventures. All the while delving into intense strategic combat employing complex missions with real consequences lurking just around the corner if disobeyed or carried out incorrectly. Products from their in-game store also help support development even further with items such as collectible ships available via pledges ranging from $50 upwards of 8700 USD for feature-packed Premium Models targeted towards die-hard fans looking for extra special features such as rare paint jobs or special console kits for star ships and powerful weapons load-outs for land vehicles like some special edition G12A4 Ground Rover Vigilante Packages – totally worth it!
