On This Day in Nintendo History is a daily series that celebrates what happened on the date of each article. This day, September 14th, 1999 saw many releases for Pokémon fans including Faxanadu and a collection of mini-games.

- In 1987, Faxanadu was launched in Japan on the Family Computer. You are an adventurer who has recently returned to his home town, the Elf village of Eolis, at the foot of the World Tree, in this action role-playing game created by Hudson Soft alongside Nihom Falcom. The hamlet is in trouble — the Elven water supply has run out, creatures are wreaking havoc, and the once-proud tree is slowly withering.
- In Japan, the Pokémon small was introduced in 2001. Nintendo produced and manufactured this portable video game system, which is based on the Pokémon media property. With a weight of just under 71 grams, it is Nintendo’s smallest gaming system with replaceable cartridges. Wooper Blue, Chikorita Green, and Smoochum Purple were the three colors available. An inbuilt real-time clock, an infrared port for multiplayer gameplay, a reed switch for sensing shaking, and a motor for force feedback are all included in the Pokémon small. Playable emulated demo versions of Pokémon mini games are available on Pokémon Channel, including the console-exclusive Snorlax’s Lunch Time. Various hackers have reverse engineered the Pokémon mini (using the aforementioned emulator in Pokémon Channel) to allow for the production of homebrew games as well as the playability of official games on other platforms (such as a PC, Dreamcast and various others).

Diglett, a ground-based Pokémon with a cherry nose, has consented to serve as the game’s single “flipper.” A Pokéball serves as the pinball, and you may use Diglett’s head to shove the ball towards bumpers, holes, and other objectives by pressing the A button. It’s a lot harder than it seems.
- In Japan, the Pokémon Puzzle Collection for the Pokémon small was launched in 2001. This small piece of plastic includes a massive 80 levels of Pokémon action in this puzzle game designed by Jupiter – and there’s a prize Pokémon given for each brainteaser you finish! You may also use the built-in Minidex to keep track of your creature-collecting efforts at any moment. The 80 puzzles are arranged into four sorts of brain-teasers, each featuring 20 games and increasing complexity.
- In Japan, the Pokémon Zany Cards were introduced in 2001 for the Pokémon small. Denyusha has created a leisurely-paced strategy game that is suitable for the more relaxed player – however you may not be so comfortable if that villainous Meowth smashes your hand of cards time and time again! Four traditional card games are brought to life with the assistance of superbly drawn Pokémon creatures that serve as both opponents and allies. Make combinations from the cards handed to you and those on the table to trump your opponents in Wild Match.
- Master of Illusion (also known as Magic Made Fun: Perform Tricks That Will Amaze Your Friends in Europe) was a Nintendo DS game published in Japan in 2006. In this non-game created by Tenyo in collaboration with 8ing, you’ll be able to execute mind-boggling magic feats in no time! The adventure begins the moment you enter Great Barbara’s magic store, your first stop on a voyage of discovery that will teach you how to utilize your Nintendo DS as an assistant for your own private magic performances.
