The campaign is a long and fulfilling, but ultimately forgettable experience. There’s an interesting story about the dangers of artificial intelligence that meshes well with your choices throughout the game – but it feels like there are too many distractions for this element to really shine.
In the first part of our review, we looked at the online multiplayer. In this second part, we will look at the campaign.
We’re back with another installment of our Call of Duty: Vanguard review. We’ll talk about the campaign in part 2! Believe it or not, many people are still purchasing the game only for the campaign. I couldn’t care less about the campaigns, yet I still go through them for a variety of reasons, the most important of which being to finish the evaluations.
Before we go any further, let’s talk about the plot. We began in 1945, at the end of World War II. You’re a member of Vanguard Task Force One, and your mission is to track down enemy information and ensure that the good people win the battle.
Characters from the United States, Russia, England, and Australia make up your squad. That’s a motley group of misfits.
The tale isn’t that compelling as you go through the game. I won’t give anything away since I strive to avoid doing so, but I do want to. I’d want to tell you why I don’t like the sorry, but I’ll keep it for a time when spoilers aren’t such an issue. Let’s just say it’s average at best, and the characters aren’t very endearing. They aren’t really noteworthy.
The game’s aesthetics upset me since this game should look fantastic. Unfortunately, it has been toned down and does not seem to be next/current generation. This game was delayed until 2020, and instead, we received a rushed edition of Black Ops Cold War. Working on Vanguard for an additional year didn’t help matters much.
With me, audio is unquestionably in excellent standing. The sound effects aren’t dominating each other as they were in Cold War and Warzone. The sound of a silenced weapon is muffled, but you can still hear enemy and friendly footfall through it. I usually drop the music volume down to zero and make a few other tiny modifications to match my playing style. In the campaign, I use the same settings as in multiplayer. I really shouldn’t since I’m sure I’m missing out on something, however, as I already said, I just play the campaign for the sake of review and principal.
The controls are tight and perform well, which is to be anticipated. One thing I can usually bank on from the Call of Duty series is controls that aren’t cumbersome or goofy. Vanguard is no exception when it comes to responsiveness.
Of course, the campaign is just a few weeks long. I finished everything in under 7 hours, including looking about and exploring what I could when I had the opportunity. Unfortunately, the plot is weak, and the campaign is quickly forgotten. I can’t image paying full price for a game and then playing it for seven hours and feeling like I got my money’s worth, but some people do, so I hope they’re happy with their purchase.
Overall, I give the Vanguard campaign a six out of ten rating. It succeeds in filling a need, but it’s also one of the most tedious campaigns I’ve seen in the genre. That is, of course, my own view, and it should not be construed as an assault on anybody who appreciates the Vanguard campaign. I have to be a bit harsher since this is a review, and I’d rather give you my honest judgment than instill false hopes in you.
Have you completed the campaign so far? What would you give it a rating, and why? I appreciate you taking the time to hear me out on this, and if you’re interested, I’ll happily read your comments and debate them with you. Check back next week for part 3 of the review, when I’ll go through my impressions on the Multiplayer mode. I’ll see you online, as always!
Part 2 of the Call of Duty Vanguard Review covers the campaign. The campaign is a typical run-and-gun first person shooter with some interesting twists. Reference: call of duty: vanguard campaign gameplay.
