Daniel Craig was asked in an interview with The Radio Times whether he would welcome a more diverse actor as James Bond’s successor. In response, the Bond of the last 15 years argued that women should be given more important positions. Barbara Broccoli, daughter of Cubby Broccoli and long-time producer on the Bond series, made a similar statement. Mrs. Broccoli previously said that James Bond is a “man” figure and that “I think we should be developing new characters for women – powerful female characters.” I’m not interested in casting a woman to portray a masculine role. Women, in my opinion, are much more interesting.” “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a role just as wonderful as James Bond, but for a woman?” Craig remarked in response to the same query. Craig’s co-star Lashana Lynch, on the other hand, has different views, saying, “With Bond, it could be a guy or a woman.” They may be of any race: white, black, Asian, or mixed. It doesn’t matter whether they’re young or elderly. At the end of the day, even if a two-year-old played Bond, people would rush to the theaters to watch what this two-year-old would accomplish, right?”
Why must we revisit this every year or so? Every now and again, a star like Gillian Anderson or Priyanka Chopra makes a pitch for a woman to play James Bond. I honestly don’t see why some people believe this is essential. Both Daniel Craig and Barbara Broccoli are correct, in my opinion. Instead of developing a fresh female character, why not reuse a male one? It’s demeaning to women, the classic film series, and the public as a whole. While I’m not opposed to race-bending in all instances, I don’t believe we need to see a person of color in the main role in Bond. Why is Hollywood (and the actresses no one cares about) so ready to retool something that is perfectly great the way it is in order to suit the current geopolitical climate? James Bond isn’t like that. He was developed in the 1950s by a former soldier who was straight and white. Authors’ views and background are often reflected in their works. To put it bluntly, I’m not fond of the notion of altering anything to make it more digestible or whatever. It won’t harm you to see a film in which one of the characters has more conventional views or belongs to a group you don’t like.
However, I am a supporter of screen diversity. I, for one, wish there were more individuals like Lin-Manuel Miranda. He wants to see specific individuals and perspectives represented in the media, and guess what? He gets it. Instead of whining about it or pushing for authors to change existing characters’ color and gender, he creates the tales he wants to see. Not everyone can be a writer, director, or composer, and I believe there is a time and a place to let the public know about your ambitions. After all, they’re just like any other company. However, it seems as though tales and characters are losing what made them distinctive and successful in the first place. All of this is done to appeal to different groups who may or may not appreciate the final result. Sorry, but as a younger woman, I really doubt we make up the majority of James Bond fans. I’ve met most of my fellow aficionados online, rather than at job, school, or any other place where I interact with my peers. I don’t see why a female spy series like Bond couldn’t exist, and there have been efforts. Instead of removing or substantially altering something that people like, create something new.
